I personally have fans installed in my patio cover to keep it even cooler but they work so well that sometimes I have to turn them off. Pergolas are great if you dont want a big cover over your patio or, if you still want to enjoy the feeling of the sun while relaxing without burning. Our pergolas are just as functional as our patio covers. I have a pergola right above my BBQ so the smoke can have an easy way out. Winter is no problem either. With a clear cover over top, rain stays out and you can still look at the clouds. They might not look like bunnies though.

Well no one is saying you cant have both, but a well constructed deck is a thing to be proud of, people will be talking about how beautiful and unique it is. A deck offers more comfortability. Some people prefer concrete but my personal preference is wood, as in my opinion, it absorbs heat better than concrete, and we can all agree we'd rather not burn.
